The present shape dates from the Romanesque style of the 12th and 13th centuries being the largest cathedral in Dalmatia. A chronicler from 1177 wrote that the gleeful inhabitants of Zadar accompanied Pope Alexander III on his way to the basilica singing songs in “their Slavic language”.

A belfry rises next to the cathedral and its present appearance dates from the 19th century according to the designs of the English architect T. G. Jackson.
